Moving Checklist Download this checklist: Word Format

Moving can be a stressful time, no matter how excited you and your family are. Here is a simple checklist to help make the transition move a bit calmer and smoother.

Weed out items you won’t be moving; hold a garage sale or donate them to charity.

Get estimates from moving companies and decide how you’ll move valuables.

Make a list of people and organizations—credit cards, magazines, college alumni associations, etc. and give them new address.

Look at schools and day care facilities in new area. Forward school records.

Complete change-of-address forms for the post office.

Contact doctors and ask for referrals if you’re moving to a new city. Forward medical records.

Check homeowners’ policy to see if possessions are covered during the move.

Map out driving route to new city.

Get information on driver's license, insurance policy, license plates, and auto stickers if you’re moving to a new city.

Contact utility companies, have gas and/or electric shut off at old house and turned on at new home.

Register with an Internet service provider and contact satellite and/or cable TV providers.

Contact phone service—have phone set-up for when you arrive, ensure cellular, and pager carriers operate in the area.

Empty and defrost refrigerator.
